Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1993-1994
Canal Lovers
Jock McFadyen's paintings focus on the run-down, often seedy side of London life. The setting for Canal Lovers is the Grand Union Canal, not far from Limehouse Basin. Although the young couple provide the image with its title, most of the picture is about the rundown, post-industrial landscape of East London. Despite the grim, oppressive architecture which surrounds them, the couple and the sapling alongside them, together with the bright blue sky, bring an element of optimism to the painting.
