The Four Times of the Day
This scene shows the Huguenot congregation emerging from the French Church in Soho. The Huguenot refugees who arrived in the 1680s used it as their first place of worship. Hogarth contrasts the respectable behaviour and appearance of the French community with the disorderliness of the natives on the other side of the street. Among the working class crowd on the left is a Black man kissing a woman holding a pie, showing the presence of Black Londoners at this date.
