Industry and Idleness: plate 1
This Hogarth print shows what an 18th century weaving workshop in Spitalfields looked like. From the 1670s Huguenots from France settled in this area and developed the silk weaving industry. Most of them had been textile workers in their native land, and quickly became renowned for their products.
