The inside of the elegant Music Room in Vaux-hall Gardens
This print depicts the Music Room or Rotunda with its orchestra stand and organ.
John Lockman wrote, ' an Edifice fram'd in the highest Delicacy and Taste. The Roof or Cieling is adorned with grand painted festoons of flowers, terminating in a Point; and looks like the Dome, if I may speak of a most august royal Tent. This Roof is so contrived that Sounds never vibrate under it; by which means, Music is heard to the greatest advantage here. The walls are elegantly painted in Mosaic'.
Underneath the windows were 16 white busts , in the centre was a large chandelier and a large space was allocated to the Orchestra where the band played in cold or rainy weather. An organ was also present.
The work was originally published with eleven other views of the gardens in the Nwe Universal Magazine ( June, July and August 1752).
