Portrait of Charles I as a Martyr King
In this bust portrait of the king immediately before his execution, he is shown with uplifted hands and dressed in execution clothes. This painting, influenced by religious art, suggests that the execution of the king would not suppress his deeper life or status. His eyes roll upwards towards heaven and, like the crown on the right-hand side of the composition, he is shrouded in light. The collar has been misrepresented here and so too has the lace on the cap and the braiding on the doublet. This may indicate that the portrait is in fact a copy after a seventeenth-century idea. Several other versions of it are known to exist.
