Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1994
The New Union Club (after George Cruikshank)
This painting is a one of a series of works based on George Cruikshank's 1819 etching 'The New Union Club'. A severe attack against the anti-slavery movement, Cruikshank's print included a black man, a white woman and their child, who was quite literally half black and half white.
Here, Lehtonen develops this theme. The stylised half-length figures of a black male (on the left) and a white female (on the right) are depicted side by side. Between them is their child divided into two halves, one black and one white. This painting by Lehtonen, who was born to a Finnish mother and a Nigerian father, mediates on issues of racial and cultural identity.
