Walking Dress
Fashion plate by Lewis & Allenby, the famous London silk-mercers, entitled ‘Walking Dress’. It depicts a woman wearing a full skirted dress with a narrow, belted waist and leg of mutton sleeves. The dress is made of cream coloured fabric printed with a pattern of red and yellow flowers. The woman also wears a cape and bonnet and carries a handkerchief.
Lewis & Allenby supplied silks to Queen Victoria and other members of the royal family. They established themselves on the west side of Regent Street in the 1820s and extended to Conduit Street in the 1830s.
