Steady Progress
The profile of a taxi driver is glimpsed through his open car window. Focused on the road ahead, he is making slow progress through congested traffic, as implied by the title. With his face in shadows, the man is anonymous except for his role as a taxi driver.
This picture is one of several studies Oliver Bevan ( born 1941) made of traffic in Hammersmith. Out of these, the artist produced nine large-scale canvasses which were designed to hang closely together in a rectangular block.
