Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1992
Full Stretch
A smartly-dressed woman makes the risky decision to leap from a moving double-decker bus to a bus shelter at the kerb. The woman's body is compressed between the bus and the shelter, aiding a feeling of closeness. The double yellow lines beneath her serve to accentuate her stretch as the bus moves away.
Oliver Bevan ( born 1941) tackles the theme of traffic from 'within' by depicting the woman at close range, as though he is amongst the traffic himself.
This image is one of several studies that the artist made of traffic in the city which were intended for a large-scale series focusing on modern road transport.
