Ginger bread nuts
An print from an extra illustrated volume of 'The cries of London' by J.T. Smith. Described as an industrious Irishman, Daniel Clarey had lost a leg fighting for his country as a seaman. Children paid a halfpenny to pull a string which made a doll’s head appear in one of the holes in the box he carried. If they picked the right one, they won a gingerbread-nut.
