Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1907
Crystal Palace, Sydenham
Built by Joseph Paxton for the Great Exhibition of 1851, Crystal Palace was transported from Hyde Park to Sydenham where it was re-erected in 1854. The Paris-born artist Jacques Emile Blanche painted the Palace and its gardens from the south-east, just above the railway station. He also made another oil sketch of the Palace from a different viewpoint in 1927.
While the building itself was conceived as a series of Fine Art Courts, the 182-acre grounds featured lakes, fountains, waterfalls and terraces. Entertainment included tennis, football, cricket, bowling and music. On the night of 30 November 1936, the building was completely destroyed by a fire.
