Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1854
Canada
The Canadian exhibits shown at the Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace in 1851 promoted the country's rich natural resources. They included ores, precious metals, minerals and stones, timber, fur and agricultural produce. Among the manufactured goods were sleighs and a fire engine, shown alongside a Native American canoe. The inclusion of objects made by Native Americans startled some commentators, who thought of them as 'savages'.
