Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1944
Evening in the City of London
The dome of St Paul's Cathedral dominates the horizon in David Bomberg's turbulent vision of the bombed-out City of London. Despite the heavy bombing, St Paul's miraculously escaped serious damage to become, for many, a symbol of resilience and hope.
Bomberg made a number of drawings of the cathedral, often going first thing in the morning, after the air raids. This view was painted in one session, from the top of St Mary-le-Bow church tower, looking west down Cheapside.
The cathedral's isolation amid the devastated buildings fascinated artists and photographers during the Second World war.
