Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1944
Evening in the City of London
The dome of St Paul's Cathedral dominates the horizon in David Bomberg's turbulent vision of the bombed-out City of London. Despite the heavy bombing, St Paul's miraculously escaped serious damage to become, for many, a symbol of resilience and hope.
The cathedral's isolation amid the devastated buildings fascinated artists and photographers during the Second World war. Bomberg made a number of drawings of the cathedral, often going first thing in the morning, after the air raids. This view was painted in one session, looking west down Cheapside, from the top of St Mary-le-Bow church tower.
