Kensal Green Cemetary
Noel Spencer's painting depicts Kensal Green Cemetery. While the view includes several large tombs, the main focus of the painting is the central white tomb erected in memory of William Cowell who died in 1857.
Born and raised in Lancashire, Spencer studied at the Royal College of Art during the 1920s. In a career spanning almost 40 years, Spencer taught in Birmingham, Sheffield and Huddersfield. He was Head of Norwich School of Art for nearly 20 years, where his memory has been honoured with the annual Noel Spencer Award for Painting.
