London from Cromwell Tower, Barbican
This panoramic view, looking southwest over the City, is taken from a 'small and rather precarious balcony' on the top floor of Cromwell Tower on the Barbican Estate. Despite being afraid of heights, the artist strapped himself, his equipment and his 'ominously-flapping canvas' to the balcony in order to paint on location.
The Barbican Estate, with Shakespeare Tower on the right and the church of St. Giles Cripplegate in the bottom left corner, is depicted in the bottom half of the painting. On the left, the block-like Bastion House rises above the Museum of London's pitched glass roof. The River Thames is visible beyond the dome of St Paul's Cathedral.
