Designed by Alfred Dryland, with Sir Herbert Baker as consulting architect, Chiswick Bridge was officially opened on 3 July 1933 by the Prince of Wales, nearly three years after work first began. Spectators who lined the streets between Chiswick and Hampton Court were disappointed by the royal opening ceremony, with local papers complaining that the visit had been 'cut down to a minimum'. This painting is one of many that the artist painted of Chiswick while living in Hammersmith.
