Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1876-1885
Old Kew Bridge
Built in 1784-9 to designs by James Paine, Old Kew Bridge was a five-arch stone bridge linking Kew with Chiswick and Brentford. This view, taken from the south-eastern end of the bridge, looks north-west. Brentford Water Tower, part of the waterworks begun in 1835, dominates the background; its size has been exaggerated to magnify the composition and reinforce the tower's verticality. Thames barges and smaller craft can be seen moored to the banks, with people nearby.
Born into a family of artists,James Webb (1825-95) was a painter of marine subjects and landscapes.
