Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1937
Piccadilly, 12th May 1937
The gold State coach and Coronation procession of George VI are depicted travelling along Piccadilly shortly before 3pm on 12 May 1937. The new King is returning to Buckingham Palace after the crowning ceremony at Westminster Abbey.
People camped out in Hyde Park on the eve of the celebrations and London was lavishly decorated for the occasion. Traffic islands in Piccadilly were decorated with blue, white, gold and red, the pavement masts with red, white and gold and the buildings with blue and white. At night, some of the city's most important landmarks were illuminated.
The artist John Lavery (1856-1941) has included a self-portrait in the composition. Sir John Lavery stands on the left-hand side of the balcony with his back to the proceedings. A portrait, genre and landscape painter, Lavery was a member of the Royal Academy and the New England Art Club.
