Paintings, Prints & Drawings — C.1935
A Corner of Russell Square
This elevated view is taken from near the British Museum in Russell Square: it looks towards the western side of the Square and includes the junction with Montague Place, pedestrians and a motorcar. Despite being one of London's biggest squares, Russell Square is not often depicted by artists. Its western side is the only one that retains some of the original early-nineteenth-century houses.
Born in Russian Poland, Stanislawa Karlowska (1876-1952) was a rural and urban landscape painter. The painting's high vantage point, prismatic colours and loose, expressive technique are typical of her work. She made a number of paintings of the Bloomsbury region whilst briefly living in the area.Married to the painter Robert Bevan the work was gifted to the Museum by her two children.
