Paintings, Prints & Drawings — C. 1890
Richmond Bridge
Built in 1774-1777 to the designs of Kenton Couse and James Paine, Richmond Bridge replaced the ferry service between Richmond and Twickenham. The stone bridge, which was widened in 1937, still stands.
The viewpoint in this painting is from the Richmond side and shows the pair of toll-houses, with the keeper collecting the toll from a couple in a gig. On the left is the gate of a boarding house. This picture, excluding the dogs in the foreground and the figures on the right, is a copy of an engraving by J. D. Harding which was published in 'Richmond and its Surrounding Scenery' (1832).
Listed as an 'artist' in Richmond in an 1887 trade directory, Lewis produced many versions of local popular scenes. He also worked from life when he was commissioned.
