Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1939
The Thames at Deptford
One of several paintings by Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson (1889-1946) in the Museum of London's collection, this impressionistic view focuses on the Deptford riverside. The viewpoint looks west from Greenwich pier and depicts the Thames as a working river.
A warehouse crane cane be seen standing on the Isle of Dogs, while barges and riverboats ply their trade along the river. Deptford Creek joins the River Thames on the left and in the middle distance can be seen: the parish church of St. Nicholas' Deptford (destroyed during the Second World War), and the chimneys of Deptford power station.
Nevinson was a prolific artist who experimented with a range of media and genres. He is perhaps best-known for his war paintings and for his output during the First World War, when he worked as an official War Artist.
