The Temporary Waterloo Bridge
In Nevinson's painting of the temporary iron bridge at Waterloo, an lighterman can be seen manoeuvring a barge in the foreground. The river is populated by several other boats, seen in the middle ground and into the distance.
Beyond the temporary bridge, erected to replace Sir John Rennie's Waterloo Bridge (demolished in 1936), can be seen the Shot Tower on the south bank, the Victoria Tower, Hungerford Bridge and Big Ben.
The landscape, topographical, genre and figure painter, Nevinson is best known for his war paintings and townscapes. One of several paintings by the artist in the Museum of London's collection, this picture focuses on the Thames as a working river.
