Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1924
Victoria Embankment
Nevinson's winter view of the River Thames, looking south-west from an upper window at the Savoy Hotel, celebrates the seasonal light and atmosphere of London. In the foreground is Cleopatra's Needle, an Egyptian obelisk erected on the site in 1878, and on the right are the Victoria Embankment Gardens which first opened to the public in 1872. Trains shuttle across the Charing Cross Railway Bridge leaving trails of smoke, further obscuring the barely visible buildings at Westminster.
A founding member of the London Group, Nevinson was also associated with the Futurist Movement and published the manifesto 'Vital English Art' with Marinetti in 1914. Several years later, Nevinson was employed as an official War Artist and is, perhaps, best known for his war paintings and townscapes.
