Greyhound Racing at Wembley Stadium
This drawing by Grace Golden shows greyhound racing at Wembley Stadium. The high vantage point of the drawing conveys both the grand scale of the stadium and the sheer number of punters enjoying the races.
Wembley stadium opened in 1923. From 1927 it regularly hosted greyhound meetings. By the 1930s there were seventeen greyhound tracks in London, many of them purpose built, and located primarily in working class suburbs such as Haringey, Catford, Walthamstow and Romford. ‘A night at the dogs’ combined a good night out with opportunities for social gambling.
