This portrait of the famous eighteenth-century actor David Garrick in the manner of Joseph Wright of Derby was produced late in Garrick's life (the costume indicates a date of c.1700 and he died in 1779). The actor is shown half-length and seated, with his right hand pressed against a document on the table in front of him. His face is turned expectantly to the viewer and a smile plays around the corners of his mouth. A quill, an ink pot and some books are nearby.
