The Caledonian Market, Copenhagen Fields
Completed in 1855 and officially opened by the Prince Consort, Caledonian Market covered an area of 15 acres and accommodated some 44,000 animals. However, the cattle market was not a commercial success; by the beginning of the twentieth century its premises were used as a vast second-hand market, which is depicted here.
This view of the north London market was taken from the tall central clock tower looking south east towards the gabled warehouses belonging to Caledonian Road railway station, which adjoin the market. As people peruse the various stalls, Clifford Hall's painting relays the popularity of the market which closed during the Second World War and never reopened. The Market Estate now stands on the north side and the south side is kept as a park.
During his career, Hall ( 1904-73) painted a wide range of subjects: he was known as a painter of landscapes, townscapes, interiors and portraits. He studied in London and Paris and several posthumous exhibitions were staged at the Belgrave Gallery.
