The Wood Lane Power Station
This painting of the power station in Wood Lane, Shepherd's Bush, viewed from the artist's house at 73 Ladbroke Grove, was described by the artist as his 'first elaborate effort at an Industrial subject'. It was completed during what he considered his 'best period': 1907 to 1913. As well as being an artist, Sir Holmes was Director of both the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery during his career.
Wood Lane Power Station was built for the Kensington, Knightsbridge, and Notting Hill Electric Light Companies. It began operating in 1900 and supplied electricity to the Kensington area. As the earliest generating power plant to provide high-voltage, three-phase generation and transmission in England, Wood Lane was important in the development of the power industry.
