Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1677
The Frozen Thames, looking Eastwards towards Old London Bridge
Numerous figures are shown enjoying themselves on the frozen river. While some are skating, others are sliding, snowballing and even shooting. Old London Bridge is in the middle distance and beyond it, part of the tower of St. Olave's Tooley Street and Southwark Cathedral.
The frost depicted in this painting is that of December 1676, which began to break on 3 January 1677, and the date of the scene shown here must be the very beginning of that month (since the painting is dated that year). This is an exceptionally large genre painting and is likely to have been the result of a commission.
