Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1928
London, Winter
Nevinson's evocative painting looks northwest towards the City of London from the southern end of Waterloo Bridge. The artist contrasts Lambeth's traditional working riverfront and its manual industries with some of London's most significant historic buildings.
The skyline features St Paul's Cathedral, the City of London School, the steeple of St Bride's Church and Blackfriars Bridge. However, Nevinson has taken some artistic licence and his cityscape is not entirely accurate. The Monument, for instance, is actually much further east.
By the end of the 20th century, the structures seen here on the foreshore had disappeared. Except for the Shot Tower, which was demolished in 1962, most of the Lambeth waterfront was cleared for the Festival of Britain in 1951.
