Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1705-1715
Lambeth Palace with a Distant View of the City
This is an elevated view of Lambeth Palace looking north-eastwards over Lambeth Marsh, with the Thames and various river vessels in the foreground. A stylised panorama of the City, from St. Paul's Cathedral to the tower, can be seen stretching across the background of the picture. Within the Palace grounds can be seen a walled flower garden, an orchard, a promenade and walkway. The Banqueting House has also been depicted. The painting, which has not been meticulously executed, probably derives from an engraving after a painting by the artist Leonard Knyff of around 1715.
