Paintings, Prints & Drawings — C. 1833
Hyde Park Corner and Constitution Arch
Holland's painting shows the Constitution Arch before it was moved to its present location at the top of Constitution Hill in 1883. Here it is shown in alignment with the entrance screen to Hyde Park which, like the Arch, was designed by Decimus Burton and built between 1825 and 1828. Beyond the screen is Apsley House, London home of the Duke of Wellington, Piccadilly and Green Park.
Road-mending operations are in progress in the foreground and a crowd has gathered to watch a troop of lancers as it passes through the Arch. This painting was exhibited at the Society of British Artists summer exhibition of 1834.
