Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1746-1750
Lambeth Palace from Horseferry
Westminster Bridge, built between 1736 and 1750, is shown on the left as completed. The barge-houses of the Archbishop of Canterbury are seen in the centre and a tree-lined walk has been laid out in front of Lambeth Palace. Lambeth stairs and St. Mary's church are depicted on the right while St Paul's Cathedral dominates the background. People are being ferried across the river in the foreground and a ceremonial barge can be spotted in middle distance.
Various versions of this painting are known to exist as it is a very popular scene and it is possible that this one derived from an engraving by John Maurer which was published in 1745.
