James Selby's Brighton Coach Outside the New White Horse Cellar, Piccadilly
The yellow and black road coach is marked as being owned by James Selby (d.1888) who was the best-known professional coachman of the period. This painting probably commemorated Selby's famous drive from London to Brighton and back in less than eight hours, for a wager of a thousand pounds. Selby is portrayed with the whip and the reins in his hands, along with his guard, Walter Godden.
