The London to Dartford Stage Coach
A stage coach being drawn by four brown horses is in the foreground of the painting, with open countryside behind. Thomas Mellin's name appears on the bottom of the coach's window frame, signalling his ownership. Under the seat's footboard is the claim: 'LICENC'd/To Carry/6 INSIDE/12 OUT'. Passengers were expected to travel inside and outside the coach. The driver, holding the reigns tightly in one hand, is sitting at the front next to a young woman. A milestone in the bottom left corner of the painting records: 'VII/Miles/from/London'. The coach is marked as plying between Spur Inn, Borough, and Black Boy, Dartford, with stops at Bexley and Crayford.
