No. 15 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea
15 Cheyne Walk, once called Carlton House, seen here from Chelsea Embankment Gardens, is a prime example of a London terrace house of the Queen Anne period. Built in 1717, it has arched window heads and an emphasised first floor. The wrought iron work in the gate and railings is of exceptional distinction. Both Admiral Sir John Balchen (1670-1744) and William Lawson, the father of Cecil Gordon Lawson (1851-1882), a well-known Victorian landscape painter, were occupants of the house. On the left of the canvas is the partially visible Queen's House, one of the finest in Cheyne Walk and once the home of the 19th century artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
