A painter of genre, historical and biblical subjects, Bacon exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1889 and was elected an Associate of the Academy in 1903. This unfinished sketch is a study for a large canvas depicting the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary. The view is taken from Presbytery and shows the High Altar. Bacon's finished painting is called 'The Coronation Ceremony of His Most Gracious Majesty King George V in Westminster Abbey. 22nd June 1911'.
