Skating on the Serpentine 1786
In a scene typical of him, Rowlandson manages to combine elegance and farce. A crowd of people skate and amuse themselves on the frozen Serpentine, some inevitably falling and sprawling. A number of coaches and chariots are parked on the right. In the distance is Cheesecake House, a celebrated refreshment lodge where syllabub and cheesecake could be had (it was pulled down in the late 1830s). The Serpentine was created early in George II's reign by damming the Westbourne. A similar piece was exhibited by Rowlandson at the Royal Academy in 1784.
