Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1785-1795
Hanover Square
Hanover Square, located in Mayfair, West London, emerged as a fashionable residential address during the eighteenth century.
In this print the Square is viewed from the north and scenes of daily life are depicted in the foreground. The site is portrayed as a lively place, with a mixture of people, vehicles and animals populating the scene. St. George's Church, a venue for many high-profile weddings during the eighteenth century, can be seen in the distance.
The contrast between light and dark serves to highlight certain areas of the print, in particular the carriage in the foreground, while the horses and pedestrians seen on the right are relegated to the shadows.
