The Tile Kilns in Maiden Lane
This watercolour depicted the tile kilns in Maiden Lane ( now York Road). The more northerly kiln has been identified as owned by Ralph Adams and the other by George Randall. Both kilns were located in the valley of the River Fleet which cut into the London clay and fuelled the largescale building works in the nineteenth century.
The Museum holds many drawings relating to the area north of the New Road before the railways and urban development completely effaced the fields beneath.
This watercolour is by an amateur lady artist called Miss Row who lived in Cloudesley Square, Islington and who would therefore have been in a good position to view the construction work taking place.
