The View of Ludgate Street from Ludgate Hill Representing the Grand West Front of that Noble Edifice the Cathedral of St Paul and the Church of St Martin Ludgate
This engraving is after a painting by William Marlow. It is a view of Ludgate Hill, seen from the West, and includes pedestrians, horses and carriages along Ludgate Street. St. Paul's Cathedral can be seen at the top of the street, partially obscured by the tower of St Martin-within-Ludgate.
Marlow was a landscape and cityscape painter who trained in the studio of marine painter, Samuel Scott. Like Scott, Marlow was influenced by Canaletto's topographical views of the city. From the 1760s onwards, he was a regular exhibitor at the Society of Artists and, in 1768, was appointed one of its directors.
