Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1759
'A hot pudding, a pudding, a hot pudding.'
This pudding seller describes the barrow he pushes as 'the Grand machine from Italy, bake as I go'. Most likely, the machine kept the puddings warm, rather than actually baked them. He supports the barrow by straps over his shoulders which leave his hands free to serve customers. In this case, he is sprinkling sugar onto a pudding.
This is Paul Sandby's original drawing for Plate 7 of the 'Twelve London Cries' series. It differs slightly from the print. The flag is more clearly a Union flag, for instance. In the print it looks more like St George's flag. Also, in the print, the barrow has a small box-like device projecting from the top, alongside the flagpole, which is missing in this drawing. The verse differs, too, reading: 'A hot pudding, a pudding...' whereas in the print this becomes 'a pudding, a pudding...'.
