Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1760
'Will your honour buy a sweet nosegay or a memorandum book'.
This young woman is selling nosegays and notebooks, one of which she holds in her left hand. The accompanying verse reads: 'Will your Honour buy a sweet nosegay or a memorandum book'.
Her floral-patterned dress is quite fine, possibly even silk, and her shoes are also fashionable. She is holding up the skirt to keep it off the dirty London streets. However, her bodice is pulled very low, revealing most of her breasts. The use of 'your Honour' indicates that her customers are men. Sandby is strongly hinting that the girl's body is for sale, as well as her goods. Court reports from the time show that young women often combined street trading with prostitution.
