Sustainability
We are committed to playing our part to improve London’s environment and to use the museum’s collections to engage with larger questions about London.
Our plans for environmental sustainability
To reduce our impact, and contribute to improving London’s environment, we plan to:
- include sustainability in conversations with our audiences, partners and staff
- look regularly at our operations to make them the best that we can be
- take care of our resources and not be wasteful
- find ways to improve how we manage our buildings and care for our collections
- realise our aspirations to become a greener museum through the new museum project and moving to Smithfield
Our aging buildings remain a challenge for us but we have made positive improvements such as green roofs and energy efficient lighting.
Smart buildings
Our smart building pilot at London Museum Docklands is a sector-leading initiative that is testing new approaches to building management. As we learn, we’ll share our experiences with the sector and our research partners so that others can use this knowledge to make their buildings as sustainable as possible too.
We’re developing a plan to achieve net zero, and are working hand-in-hand with the City of London Corporation and Citigen, our energy supplier in Smithfield, to achieve this goal.
We’re also committed to supporting small businesses through our ‘Made in London’ programme, which prioritises buying retail products from local suppliers.
