Website accessibility policy
This statement explains what we know about the accessibility of the websites we operate, what we are doing to address the accessibility of our websites and how to contact us about web accessibility.
This accessibility statement applies to the London Museum websites on behalf of our Board of Governors.
By London Museum websites we mean:
londonmuseum.org.uk
londonmuseum.org.uk/shop
museumtickets.londonmuseum.org.uk
fireoflondon.org.uk
Working towards inclusivity
We are committed to making our websites and mobile applications accessible, in accordance with The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018 No.952. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website.
We are working hard to ensure our website is compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.2 AA standard.
This website was last tested in June 2024. We use Lighthouse (with touch targets) and Sa11y to scan our existing website regularly. We expect our design and technical partners to meet the AA standard for any future development.
Adapting our site for your needs
We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:
- Change colours, contrast levels and fonts
- Navigate our websites using just your keyboard
- Navigate our website using speech recognition software
- Listen to our website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
We've also made the website text as simple as possible to understand
For tips on how to change text size, text and background colours, and other display settings through your browser check the Web Accessibility Initiative guide

How we’re making our language more inclusive
We are committed to the ongoing process of making our collections more inclusive. As part of this work we have created a new set of Starter Vocabularies as language guides to use for our collections going forward. More about the Starter Vocabularies
Images, video and audio
As part of our ongoing ambition to make our collections more accessible, we have used artificial intelligence (AI) to generate some of the alt text used for images.
We have also used AI to generate the transcripts that accompany the audio files in our oral histories collection.
All of our videos are captioned and in the Visit section you will find a set of BSL videos describing the visit experience. More about access when visiting our museums
Users who want to reduce dynamic moving elements
We have introduced ‘reduced motion mode’ on our homepage - this disables the parallax in the homepage and all of the animations on flourishes and blocks. The setting is available to both Mac and PC users and it can also be turned on in the browser.
Compliance Status
On October 5, 2023, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) officially released the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2. Our technical partners carried out an audit of our website in June 2024. Remedial work on any issues will be prioritised with a goal to address any issues raised by July 2024.
Some of our websites are partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.
Non-accessible content
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.
Some of our IIIF image viewers and our forms are built and hosted through third party software and 'skinned' to look like our website.
Our purchase path and online shop websites are built and hosted by third party suppliers with sometimes limited customisation available. We will continue to work with our suppliers to ensure these sites can be as accessible as possible.
Disproportionate Burden
Due to its age, our Great Fire microsite is not totally compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard.
We’ve assessed the cost and resources needed to fix the issues we believe that doing so now would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the accessibility regulations.
