Clive Bannister

Appointed by the GLA in 2013

Clive is also Chair of the Museum’s Finance & General Purposes Committee, the Trust Fund Management & Acquisitions Committee, and sits on the Remuneration Committee. He is Chair of Rathbones Group plc and of Beazley plc. and was formerly CEO of Phoenix Group plc and Group Managing Director at HSBC Group plc.

Bridget Banton

GLA appointment, July 2023

Bridget is creative consultant and founder of Dear Creative Gurl, strategic advisor to B Corp UK, a member of BAFTA, fellow of the Royal Society for Arts, Manufactures & Commerce, and volunteer mentor at ScreenSkills. Bridget formerly worked in British television as a commissioning editor at both Channel 4 and BBC.

Matthew Bell

CoLC appointment, September 2023

Matthew sits on the Museum’s Remuneration Committee. He has been a Councillor of the City since 2017, representing the Ward of Farringdon Within. He is a psychoanalyst and co-founded The Farringdon Practice and The City Well-Being Centre, a social enterprise mental health service open to all irrespective of income. Matthew commissioned the Peasants’ Revolt Memorial in Smithfield.

Alice Black

GLA appointment, October 2022

Alice is Chair of the Museum’s Trading Company and sits on the New Museum Project Board. She founded ArtULTRA, an arts management company, in 2021. Alice was previously at the Design Museum, first as Deputy Director and then as co-Director, where she led the project to transform the former Commonwealth Institute in Kensington.

Prof. Sir David Cannadine

CoLC appointment, June 2022

Sir David (FBA FRSL FSA FRHistS FRSA) sits on the Museum’s Trust Fund Management & Acquisitions Committee. He is Dodge Professor of History Emeritus at Princeton University, a visiting professor of history at Oxford University, editor of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, and immediate past President of the British Academy. He is a historian and author, co-author, and editor of numerous books.

Cllr. Kaya Comer-Schwartz

CoLC appointment, September 2021

Appointed as London Councils representative, Kaya has been Leader of Islington Council since May 2021; she was previously Executive Member for Children, Young People and Families, with responsibility for Arts and Culture in the borough. Kaya formerly worked in the charity sector with organisations such as the Centre for Mental Health, Shelter, World Jewish Relief, and The Women's Library.

John Foley

CoLC appointment, September 2023

John has been a Councillor of the City since March 2022, representing the Ward of Farringdon Within. He is an actor, writer, puzzle-setter, audiobook producer, and Executive Editor of The City Courant. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a Liveryman of the Wax Chandlers’ and of the Fishmongers’ Companies, a Trustee of The Shaw Society and of Age UK City of London.

Sarah Gillinson

GLA appointment, January 2024

Sarah is Chief Executive of Innovation Unit (a not-for-profit, growing and scaling social innovation), and is currently co-leading GoodLives GM - a strategic partnership with Greater Manchester Combined Authority. She was formerly Director of Strategy for the New York Public Library system (USA).

Alderman Alison Gowman CBE

CoLC appointment, March 2014

Alison is Chair of the Museum’s Remuneration Committee and sits on the Audit & Risk Management Committee. She has been Alderman for the Ward of Dowgate since 2002 and is consultant solicitor at DLA Piper UK LLP. She is the City of London Corporation's lead member for climate action and was a founder Director of the Green Finance Institute. Alison is a Lay Canon of St Paul's Cathedral and author of The City of London: Who, What, Why? published in 2019.

Alderman Gregory Jones KC

CoLC appointment, May 2022

Gregory has been a Councillor of the City since 2012 and an Alderman since 2016, representing the Ward of Farringdon Without. He is a barrister with chambers at Francis Taylor Building, Inner Temple. He is a Bencher of both Lincoln’s Inn and of Inner Temple, and an associate tenant of KBW Chambers in Leeds. He is the author of a number of legal textbooks and articles.

Lindsay Herbert

GLA appointment, March 2019

Lindsay is an innovation expert and Global Chief Innovation Officer, IBM Garage & IBM Inventor. At IBM, she uncovers new solutions to answer major industry challenges. Lindsay is author of Digital Transformation, published in 2017.

Paul Martinelli

CoLC appointment, December 2017

Paul sits on the Museum’s Finance & General Purposes Committee. He has been a Councillor of the City since 2013, representing the Ward of Farringdon Without. Paul runs his family’s business, P.J. Martinelli Limited, at Smithfield. He is Treasurer of the Smithfield Market Tenants Association, a liveryman of the Butchers’ Company, and Trustee of the City of London Archaeological Trust.

Simon Morris

GLA appointment, October 2022

Simon is a creative entrepreneur; he was formerly Chief Creative Officer of Amazon and co-founded Lovefilm (now Amazon Prime Video) in 2004. As Consumer Marketing Director at BskyB, he was instrumental in the satellite broadcasting revolution, before co-founding digital publisher 365 Corp (Football 365, Music 365). Previously he launched Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog and was Managing Director of Ginger Television Productions (TFI Friday).

Ijeoma Okoli

GLA appointment, October 2022

Ijeoma is Chair of the Museum’s Audit & Risk Management Committee. She is a senior finance, securities and regulatory lawyer with experience advising financial services firms and corporate clients globally. She is also a strategic adviser on digital assets, co-Founder and co-Director of the Digital Economy Initiative and a Limited Partner of Impact X Capital Partners.

Samir Patel

GLA appointment, July 2023

Samir sits on the Museum’s Finance & General Purposes Committee. He is a digital and innovation leader and has been CEO of Comic Relief since 2021. Samir formerly worked in consultancy with Amnesty International, Oxfam, UN Refugee Agency UNHCR, Plan International, WaterAid, Google, Co-op, Natural History Museum and Tate Modern.

Judith Pleasance

Judith sits on the Museum’s Audit & Risk Management Committee and the Trust Fund Management & Acquisitions Committee. She has been a Councillor of the City since 2013, representing the Ward of Langbourn. Judith is a Special Projects and Events Consultant with experience across the City, all the Royal Palaces in London, Windsor Castle and the Houses of Parliament.

Charlotte Twyning

CoLC appointment, October 2022

Charlotte is a Non-Executive Director at Melrose plc and Chair of their Nomination Committee, she is also a board adviser of SAYes Mentoring Ltd. She was formerly Director, Covid 19, at Heathrow Airport Holdings and worked previously with Abellio Group and BT Group, and as a Competition Lawyer with Denton Wilde Sapte LLP and with Hammonds, LLP.

David Wormsley

David sits on the Museum’s Finance & General Purposes Committee and the New Museum Project Board. He is a Non-Executive Director of Stanhope plc and of Glencore plc. David was formerly at Citigroup for 35 years, culminating in his appointment as Chairman of UK banking and broking.
