Social History — 1960-1979
Sign, shop sign
This sign was displayed in the food department of the North Cheam and Whetstone branch of Woolworth's. It reflects an era when preservatives were regarded as an asset to processed food. Woolworth's spent much of the 1960s rolling grocery and greengrocery out across its stores before deciding in 1969 that profits were not high enough and the range should be scaled back.
