Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1917
A House at Hampstead
The house at the centre of this painting belonged to the school the artist's son attended until 1913. However, as the school did not acquire this particular building until 1916, it is unlikely that Bevan painted it because of family connections. Like other members of the Camden Town Group, of which he was a founding member, Bevan drew his subject matter from his immediate surroundings, no matter how mundane they might be. This building, which stands on the corner of Belsize Park and Buckland crescent, was literally around the corner from the artist's home. It may be that the building's isolated position at the junction of two roads, appealed to his sense of design.
